How to Switch Real Estate Website Providers Without Losing Rankings

Moving providers is mostly about sequence. Do it in the right order and you keep your rankings, your domain, and every lead.

Agents stay on websites they have outgrown because switching feels risky. It is manageable — the damage almost always comes from doing things in the wrong order.

1. Confirm you control the domain

Before anything else, log in to your domain registrar. If your current provider registered the domain for you, get access or have it transferred to an account in your name. This is the single most important step: a website can be rebuilt in a week, a domain you do not control can hold you hostage for months.

2. Write down your current URLs

List the pages that actually get traffic — your home page, area guides, blog posts, popular listings. You need this list to build redirects. If you skip it, every ranking you have built points at a dead page. See real estate SEO for why this matters.

3. Build the new site before you cut over

Publish the new site on a temporary address first. Move your bio, photos, area content, and testimonials. Get the forms working and test them. Nothing about this step touches your live site.

4. Map old URLs to new ones

Every old URL should redirect to its closest equivalent with a permanent (301) redirect. Same content, same page. Where there is no equivalent, send it somewhere sensible rather than the home page. This is what preserves rankings.

5. Start the listing feed early

Your DDF or board feed does not transfer — the new provider submits a new request, and approval takes time. Start it as soon as you decide to move so it is not the thing holding up your launch. See CREA DDF explained.

6. Export your leads first

Export contacts and lead history before you cancel anything. Providers are not obliged to keep your data after the account closes, and this is the part you cannot rebuild.

7. Switch DNS, then watch

Point the domain at the new site, keep the old account alive for a few weeks as insurance, and check that forms deliver, redirects fire, and search traffic holds. Resubmit your sitemap so indexing catches up quickly.

AgentsWise publishes on an agentswise.ca address immediately, so you can build and test before touching DNS, and supports redirects, sitemaps, and Canadian board feeds. Compare on the comparison pages or start free.
